In 1728, John Daniel was found dead in a field near his home in Beaminster. His death was believed to be natural, and he was buried without a full investigation.
Accounts differ, describing him as either a boy or a local man.
Weeks later, reports began to emerge.
Children at the local school described hearing unexplained sounds — voices, metal striking, and activity where no one should have been.
Then came the sightings.
Several boys later claimed they saw a coffin inside the church… and what they believed to be the figure of John Daniel beside it.
These accounts became part of the story surrounding the case.
What is historically documented is what followed.
Authorities ordered his body exhumed, and a coroner’s inquest concluded that the cause of death was strangulation.
No one was ever convicted.

MILLIONS NEVER KNEW THEY WERE PART OF THIS EXPERIMENT
For years, most of the people living beneath these flights had no idea they had been included in one of the U.S. military’s largest open-air dispersion tests.
Between 1957 and 1958, the U.S. Army carried out Operation LAC (Large Area Coverage), releasing microscopic zinc cadmium sulfide particles across large areas of the United States and parts of Canada. According to official records, the tests were designed to study how airborne materials might spread over long distances during the Cold War, helping military planners understand the potential effects of biological warfare.
At the time, officials maintained that the material was considered safe at the concentrations used. However, decades later, some scientists, researchers, and members of the public questioned whether the compound may have posed potential health risks, prompting further reviews. Subsequent assessments, including a National Research Council review, concluded that the available evidence did not support widespread harm from the tests, though the secrecy surrounding the programme has continued to raise ethical questions about informed public consent.
